Healthy vision depends on timely diagnosis and well-informed care.
This section provides an overview of common eye conditions—especially glaucoma and cataract—and explains how modern diagnostic tools, medications, and surgical advances are helping patients maintain clear sight.
Each page in this section focuses on a specific condition or treatment method, written in simple, factual language to help patients understand their options.
Glaucoma is one name given to a group of eye diseases that share one sign i.e damage to the optic nerve head. This nerve gives us vision, colour vision and side vision; it is the latter that decreases slowly, so patients are unaware of the early symptoms. That is why it is referred to as the ‘silent thief of sight’. This progresses from the sides and till the very late stage, central vision remains intact. The damage to the optic nerve head is permanent and irreversible. The end result is irrecoverable blindness.
Contrary to popular belief, it can occur at any age, even in a new-born. However, the commoner types usually occur after the age of 40.
For cases where medical therapy is insufficient, including the traditional surgery called Trabeculectomy or the modern options MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery). In the latter, not only is recovery rapid and almost as quick as that of modern-day cataract surgery, but it is also very safe as compared to traditional surgery.
A cataract occurs when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision and light sensitivity. It’s a normal part of aging but can also occur earlier due to diabetes, eye injury, or prolonged steroid use. Newborns may also be affected – congenital cataract.
Treatment:
Modern phacoemulsification surgery allows safe and painless removal of the cloudy lens with ultrasound technology. It is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL); nowadays, IOLs are capable of reducing dependence on spectacles by giving the full range of vision – distance, intermediate and near. Patients usually experience rapid recovery and improved vision within days.
In certain cases, cataract and glaucoma surgeries are combined to ensure optimal pressure control and visual outcome.
Advances in glaucoma surgery have made treatment less invasive and recovery faster.
Dr. Pathak-Ray is a pioneer of Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGS) in India and performs procedures such as iStent Inject, Kahook Dual Blade (KDB) and Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation (ECP), which offer pressure control with minimal tissue disruption.
These procedures are precise, safe, and tailored to each patient’s condition.
In addition to glaucoma and cataract management, Dr. Pathak-Ray offers specialized care for:
