Dr. Vanita Pathak Ray is a consultant ophthalmologist with more than 25 years of experience in glaucoma and cataract management. Known for her meticulous approach and deep commitment to patient education, she has helped thousands preserve their sight through timely diagnosis and personalized treatment.

A Journey of Learning, Teaching, and Healing

After completing her MBBS from Calcutta National Medical College, Kolkata (nee Calcutta), Dr. Pathak-Ray moved to the United Kingdom for advanced ophthalmic training. She obtained her Post-graduate degrees from Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (FRCS Ed.) and Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London (FRCOphth, Lon.).

Her pursuit of excellence took her further to Canada, where she completed a prestigious Glaucoma Fellowship at the University of Toronto, gaining hands-on expertise in complex glaucoma management and surgical innovation.

Returning to India, she joined the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, as a consultant and trainer, before assuming her current position as Senior Consultant Glaucoma and Cataract Services at Centre for Sight, Hyderabad.

At Centre for Sight, Dr. Pathak-Ray specializes in the management of glaucoma and cataract, offering comprehensive diagnostic, laser, and surgical care.

Beyond clinical work, she mentors young ophthalmologists, conducts academic teaching sessions, and continues to contribute to national and international research collaborations.

Dr. Pathak-Ray’s contributions have been recognised both in India and abroad for her dedication to patient care and advancement of glaucoma treatment.

One of a handful of Indian glaucoma specialists admitted as a Fellow in Glaucoma Surgery by the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery.

First Indian Glaucoma specialist to perform micro trabecular by-pass minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) – iStent

First Indian Glaucoma specialist to perform MIGS in angle closure disease (phaco-endocycloplasty)

First Indian Glaucoma specialist to use Kahook Dual Blade to perform goniectomy in adults

First to perform non-valved Aurolab Aqueous Drainage Implant (AADI) while at LVPEI – one of a handful of Glaucoma specialists in the country performing this surgery

Successfully conducted CME in Glaucoma on World Glaucoma Day 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2024 and 2025 as well as webinars in 2021 and 2022

Advancing Ophthalmic Science Through Research and Education

Dr. Pathak-Ray’s research explores early glaucoma detection, surgical outcomes, and patient adherence in chronic eye diseases. Her focus remains on improving real-world outcomes through evidence-based innovations.

She has authored and co-authored several papers in international journals, contributing to the understanding of modern glaucoma surgery and its impact on quality of life.
